— Concept —
We wanted to take an iconic book in the Public Domain and redesign the cover with a unique alternative design.
— Planning —
Our best option after a long while searching was the classic tale of ‘King Arthur and His Knights of the Roundtable. This story had lots of potential in alternative designs, especially regarding the years of history this tale has. With that history, although, we wanted to make it feel new and refreshing.
Many of the designs that exist on current coping on the market focus heavily on the sword in the stone and King Arthur with his Round Table. Which makes sense in regard to the title of the tale. We here at Ryanism Industries wanted to take a new look and the design and focus on Merlin the Wizard for the cover.
Great ideas do not come from the void, as we were during our research heavily inspired by the Middle Earth Quest Book, ‘A Spy in Isengard’. This was a perfect selection to base our new design off of, to include the wisdom and power of a high class wizard.
While sketching our ideas, we found another notable character that rarely made it on the cover was the Lady of the Lake. We decided to put merlin on the cover with a Crystal Ball that would contain the title with the Lady of the Lake holding the back cover together.
— Execution —
Our original attempt was finished in 2023-03-16 titled “King Arthur”
Our final design chose a royal color palette to enhance the legendary status of the tale. Purple assisted in making our standout characters of Merlin and the Lady of the Lake appear very strong in a minimal design based around shadows. Although we knew we could have done more, we had not acquired the skills yet.
— Revisons —
Coming back to King Arthur’s tale with new skills and a much cleaner understanding of the graphic elements, we knew exactly how we wanted to improve our original design. During the reanalysis of the previous rendition we found a high-quality baseplate. Although we found two major errors.

How do we fix this?
Ryanism Industries found the most effective technique to be breaking down our original design and rebuilding the layout. Once we found a good structure, we brought the original graphic elements into Procreate to render them with more interesting detail.
— Final —
We were better able to capture the intended tone of the cover and back cover. Keeping a dark yet regal design one might look for in a collectors edition of the book.
Our Final product is a high-quality book cover that demonstrates our understanding of what makes a book interesting to a viewer. We kept the design relevant and refreshing, while still holding to Arthurian tradition. Returning to the top of the breakdown, two high-quality 5x7 prints are free for download and printing.
